Epic Swing Night December 8th
featuring Gary & Amanda, Manu & Yon, Rich and the Rhythm Roustabouts
|
|
For the last Epic Swing Night of the year, we're having an epic DOUBLE FEATURE night!
What does this double feature entail? For the first time, Epic Swing Night will have two sets of instructors! We will have two classes each from Gary and Amanda Sharpe, as well as Manu Smith and Yon Richner. All of them are fabulous teachers - treat yourself to an early Christmas present and check out all they have to offer!
Each of these pairs of instructors will be teaching one Advanced class and one Intermediate/Advanced class. The Intermediate/Advanced can be taken by either level, but know that while it will be accessible to intermediate dancers, it will be challenging! Come prepared to work on some good stuff! Advanced students will have the option of staying with one partner for the class if they so desire.
We are welcoming local favorites The Rhythm Roustabouts this time around! The Rhythm Roustabouts are a group of musicians working with the knowledge that your Jazz should be hot and your Swing should be hard hitting. The Roustabouts are ready to rally with enough power to keep the party going all night & enough soul to sing your blues through to morning. Celebrating the pulsing Swing music of the 1920s & 30s, the fiery sound that came out of the cauldron of New Orleans and taught a nation to dance its own dances, the Roustabouts know what it means to Swing Out!
Class Descriptions
Rhythm Nation
Manu and Yon - Intermediate/Advanced
In dancing, rhythm is a must-have...syncopation is a nice to have. In this class we will explore syncopation, rhythm and musicality, of course. Get ready to listen, feel, and dance!
In and Out
Manu and Yon - Advanced
Stretch, compress, make your dancing gooey and yummy. In this class you will learn the art of leading and following while make each other feel GOOD! What else did you think it was going to be about?!
Fast Solo Charleston Routine
Gary and Amanda - Intermediate/Advanced
A relatively short, but fast Charleston routine to challenge your solo movement and 'boost' your heart rate. =)
Choose Your Own Adventure
Gary and Amanda - Advanced
A classic tale of risk, reward, and The Lindy Hop. We’ll start with some relatively simple movement and explore how small changes yield interesting results. See excerpt below:
- Just Swing Out -- go to pg 45
- Let her rip and hold on for dear life with all your might. -- go to pg 66
- Let go with your right, grab her left with your left, turn, turn, turn (...and relax). go to pg 77
- pg. 45 - You may not get any points for originality, but a solid swing out will almost always win you a smile (and another dance).
- pg. 66 - You just broke your follows arm and she's screaming in pain... All of her friends will soon hate you... Pick up and move somewhere far, far away.
- pg. 77 - You somehow pulled it off, hit that high note with your long lines, and managed to not turn you, or your follow, purple in the process. And, her friend just asked you to dance.
Schedule

4:30-5:30 = Advanced class with Manu & Yon

Epic Swing Night November 10th
featuring Catrine Ljunggren, Nathan Dias, and Port City Jazz Band
|
|
Did you know that Herrang a tiny village in Sweden, of all places, is the Mecca for Lindy Hoppers all over the world? Every summer there is a dance camp held there where thousands of enthusiastic dancers come to learn all that they can from the best in the world. This camp is very special not only for the high level of instruction and amazing dances, but a sense of community, belonging, hijinks, artistic expression, mischief, camaraderie, good hard work, spirit and collaboration. You definitely get out of Herrang what you put into it!
Why Sweden you may well ask? In the 1980s A group of Swedish people had an inkling that this dance would be well worth doing and they were the first ones to go out to New York to find the originators of the dance, they brought them over to Sweden to study intensively for a week and Herrang Dance Camp was born. It now spans 5 weeks of instruction and many camper and staffer fueled activities and projects. Really whatever you want to do can be done, but the main events every week include a blues night, a cabaret in which anyone can put together an act for the entertainment of the whole rest of the camp and a Masquerade Night with a theme to drive games, activities, and costumes for the night!
Catrine Ljunggren, one of the original Swedes studying Lindy Hop since these first weeks of Herrang dance camp, will be teaching and hosting this November's SWEDISH EPIC SWING NIGHT!
We are very excited to be welcoming Catrine back to the bay area where she was a vital, inspirational aspect to the teaching and organizing forces in our scene! Her classic style, clean lines, attention to detail and characteristic Swedish exuberance and athleticism will be showcased on November 10th at SWEDISH EPIC SWING NIGHT!
Port City Jazz Band will be joining us again this time to celebrate everything Swedish!
Class Descriptions
1 hour Social Lindy Hop Class that will be chock full of socially leadable and followable moves and details of connection that Catrine has gathered throughout her long Lindy career.
1.5 hour Performance Lindy Hop Class that will be challenging for any advanced dancer, geared toward faster tempos, performance lines and flash tricks for jam circle opportunities. Even if you aren't into performing in front of an audience, this class will give you plenty of tools to look awesome on the social floor!
1 hour Tap Fundamentals for Lindy Hoppers. Getting a precision to ones footwork and a sense of deliberate weight changes and commitment in swing time is an excellent way to connect to the music, become more body aware, and exercise your mind and body! Catrine does both, so she'll know where you're coming from as a Lindy dancer doing Tap!
Dance activities
- Tap Jam (improvisational tap circle taking turns jamming whatever we want for as long as we want!)
- Cabaret (BRING IT! write to EpicSwingDancing@gmail.com if you have an act you or your group would like to present)
- Masquerade Night! Our theme this time is EPIC ADVENTURE! What is your Quest?! Come as your inner Indiana Jones or Lara Croft, aboriginal native, the holy grail or maybe a boulder…
- Blues Night! It's time to get our blues on! Always a good excuse to ask that camper you've had your eye on and what better time of night!
- Whatever your imagination can dream!

Epic Swing Night July 14th
featuring Jandi Kim, Gilles Bouvier, and Clint Baker's New Orleans Jazz Band
|
|
Epic Swing Night is proud to welcome back the illustrious Jandi Kim! We're super psyched to have such a high level instructor from Korea in the Bay Area to give us a fresh perspective on Lindy Hop. - Swing Out Technique (Intermediate)
- Styling and Core Movement (Advanced)
While the "Styling and Core Movement" class will be advanced, we think that you intermediate dancers out there could gain a lot from trying to learn these concepts as well, so you can take the class as a part of an intermediate rotation. We encourage you to still try it out, but keep in mind that the advanced students will be setting the pace!
Alisa Clancy from KCSM Jazz 91.1 will be back to give an Epic Jazz Lecture regarding a mysterious topic: "What Flavor Saxophone."
Our house band Clint Baker's New Orleans Jazz Band comes back home and will keep us swingin' hard til the end. You know these guys can bring it, so you better bring it too and give them your best!

Epic Swing Night – June 9th
featuring Michael Faltesek, The Careless Lovers
|
|
Flying in for their first appearance in the Bay Area, Epic Swing Night proudly brings to you the sensational, Lindy-Hopper-comprised Careless Lovers! If you've been dancing in the Lindy scene any time in the last year, you know this is cause for insane amount of excitement!
Many of you know them from the awesome music video they made for the Jazz Dance Film Fest.
For those of you who were at the 920 Open House or the Stompy Jones CD release party, you've also probably seen WNH's Careless Lindy Hoppers perform a routine (choreographed by Kevin & Jo) to this song as well.
In any case, you can be sure that they are going to bring one hell of a STFO party!
Check out our Epic Schedule:
4:30-6:00 = Epic Lindy Hop Class
6:00-7:30 = Epic Jazz Lecture & Dinner
7:30-9:00 = Epic Solo Jazz Class
9:00-12:00 = Epic Swing Dance with the Careless Lovers!
Mike Faltesek (aka Falty) will be laying down the Lindy wisdom for the night, assisted by our very own Audrey Kanemoto! They'll be teaching two 1.5 hour classes: one on Lindy Hop improvisation, and a solo jazz class that will teach you the routine "Doing The Jive"!
We've got another jazz lecture by Alisa Clancy from 91.1 KCSM! This month the topic will be "The American Songbook: Fodder For Great Dancing"
We will also have two performances - The Careless Lindy Hoppers will be performing their "Black Coffee" routine with the live band, and everyone who knows "Doing the Jive" will be able to perform with the band as well!
Class Descriptions
Improvisation: Do you find yourself getting stuck in the same patterns over and over? Does it feel like you're just stringing a bunch of moves together? Not sure what to do to be "more creative?" Need to break out and add more style and personality to your dancing? Falty is your man! He's one of the most creative and fun dancers in the Lindy world! Anyone who has taken his classes on these things only have glowing reviews. This will be a mixed level class - we may or may not divide by levels again. Falty assures us that whatever happens, there will be a mix of material that is challenging and inspiring for both intermediate and advanced dancers alike!
Solo Jazz: You know the Shim Sham. Maybe you know the Tranky Doo, and perhaps even the Big Apple. If you're old school, you might even know the Jitterbug Stroll. But, you know what? All of those are going to be "old school" now. The next big thing is totally "Doing the Jive!" The 9:20 Special will be teaching one class on this right before ESN, and we wanted to give everyone a chance to learn it and perform it to the band! All you 9:20 peeps, come on out and get more solid with the routine. Everybody else, let's do the jive! Dancers of all levels will find something valuable to learn here. Falty has been one of the big draws at Stompology (solo jazz weekend workshop) for a number of years - you can count on him to give you invaluable instruction on how to make your movements authentic and clean, as well as a fresh perspective on solo movement.

Epic Swing Night May 12th
featuring Hunter Demaray, Audrey Kanemoto, and Clint Baker's New Orleans Jazz Band
|
|
Epic Swing Night in May celebrates the Epic RETURN of Hunter Demaray! Hopefully you've seen him out dancing around the bay area and have already noticed or remembered a few things about Hunter:
- He's fun to dance with.
- He likes dancing fast.
- He's got really nice lines.
There's obviously more but, to that effect, Hunter will be teaching two classes on May 12th. The first will be a 2 hour intensive class on FAST LINDY! We believe Lindy Hop was meant to be done at blazing speeds and we'll get you feeling that exhilaration! The second class will be all about using your body and making fun expressive interesting or beautiful lines together! Shape your Lindy Hop! Both classes are for intermediate and above level dancers. Everyone can learn these concepts no matter what level you are, but we will split the rotations by level.
If the choice of movie wasn't obvious enough already from the poster, we're going to take it up a notch, and make the theme of the dance "Enchantment Under the Sea." That's right people, get ready all of your best 1950's style dance wear.

The next Epic Swing Night is right around the corner, and we've got some extra info ready to get you pumped up for it!
Attire - Dress Up!
Dress to impress! If you've got something that would make you look just like Don, Cosmo, or Kathy, then totally go for it - but if not, just look shnazzy!
Photo Contest!
We've just added a photo contest! Epic Swing needs a lot more photos than what we have, so we're giving away three free passes to the next Epic Swing night for the following:
- The photo we choose to use as the cover photo on our Facebook page
- The best overall photo of the night
- One photo at random - each photo is one entry!
You can submit up to 25 photos max by either submitting them to ESN's photo album (I believe you can add photos to it, but I can't test that!), or by creating your own photo album with "ESN March 24th" somewhere in the title, and tag us when you post it.
Dust off your lenses, photographers - you could be learning from Stefan and Bethany for free!
Class Descriptions
The Aerials Classes
Beginning and Intermediate aerials classes are designed to be taken in series together. Even if you have aerials experience already, in the beginning lesson Jean and Bromley will be refreshing important technique and skills that make air steps easier and safer! The intermediate class will build on the techniques learned in the beginning class, so even if you are brand new to aerials, you will be able to follow what is going on in the intermediate class if you had the benefit of taking the beginning class before it.
We will not be rotating during aerials classes, so you need to secure a partner for class beforehand. Taking the beginning lesson with your designated partner before going on to the intermediate lesson will help you gel as a team better and practice not only the moves and exercises but communicating effectively with each other - hopefully leading to greater accomplishments!
Advanced Lindy - JAMS!
Advanced Lindy Class this weekend will be a JAM class! There is nothing like the excitement of joining in or watching a Jam Circle! I saw two of them form just this weekend and I'm excited to see more of this happening in the SF area! Jean and Bromley will help you hone your jam circle skilz and get you comfortable with short performance!
Teacher Bios
Look at these guys - how could you not want to take classes from them?
Why You Should Totally Take the Aerials Classes
From personal experience, I (Brian) can tell you that Jean and Bromley are amazing aerial instructors. I was a part of their aerial-intensive group, JB and the Frequent Flyers, for a year, and during that time we did A LOT of work on air steps! They took us through all the steps to make sure that we knew how to set up an aerial correctly, and how to safely mitigate the effects of an aerial gone awry. For those of you who don't know, Bromley is a gymnast who trained under an Olympic gold medalist - what more could you ask for?
I remember J&B telling me a story about two professional Lindy Hoppers who were working on aerials together, but who didn't have the proper technical understanding of how the air step was supposed to be done - the follow ended up injuring herself pretty seriously. Even the people who swing out better than anyone can still make mistakes in this area - make sure you come learn safe technique form the best! These two have been hired by several international instructors for guidance in aerial training.
Aerials workshops are really special events - There are very few times that you will be able to learn this kind of material from the likes of Jean and Bromley! Head on over to our registration and sign up now!

ESN Jan 28 Class Descriptions
Hey! Class descriptions from Pat Wall and Ann Mony are here! Check it out:
6:15 - 7:15 Advanced Lindy: Movement and Momentum!
Ever wonder how some dancers make their simple moves look so good? The simple secret to this is using the natural momentum of Lindy Hop in all your moves and to keep the dance flowing. We will take some simple moves and break down how to make them look and feel wonderful.
7:15 - 8:00 Lecture: Trumpet Stars of the 30s and 40s!
Alisa Clancy brings the stars out this night as we explore the sweet sounds of the trumpet masters! Don't forget that this lecture is included in the price of your classes or dance admission, so come on in and enjoy this special treat. If you are signed up for at least one of the classes, please also join us for pizza dinner.
8:00 - 9:00 Intermediate Lindy: Break it Up!
Having a hard time handling musical breaks in your Charleston? In this class we will work on inserting breaks into all areas of traditional Charleston positions (side by side, hand to hand, tandem, etc) and how to transition smoothly in and out of them.
CRITIQUE SESSIONS
6:15-7:15 Intermediate Critique Session
8:00-9:00 Advanced Critique Session
Nathan and Audrey will only be taking 6 leaders and 6 followers in each of these Critique Sessions in order to watch or dance with each couple or individual. This is a great way shake things up and rock your Lindy world. It is valuable to hear from your teachers and peers what they think you are doing well and what you might need more work on.
Why, yes, we *did* stagger the critique sessions so that you can do this AND get some level appropriate time in with Pat and Ann! Thank you for noticing!
Make sure to pre-register online - prices go up at the door!
Epic Swing Night – January 28th
EPIC SWING NIGHT is moving! We will be in our new location soon but in the meantime our transitional location will be at City College of San Francisco on January 28th. Thank you, David Blood, for hosting us while we make our Epic Transformation (We will soon be reborn like a phoenix rising out of its own ashes).
Check out the epic fun we will have in San Francisco!
| 6:15-7:15 | Epic Advanced Lindy Hop Class |
| Epic Intermediate Critique Session | |
| 7:15-8:00 | Epic Jazz Lecture (Pizza provided) |
| 8:00-9:00 | Epic Intermediate Lindy Hop Class |
| Epic Advanced Critique Session | |
| 9:00-11:30 | Epic Swing Dance! |
The classes will be taught by the incomparable Pat Wall & Ann Mony. Like a master puppeteer, Pat Wall can make a follower do anything and make her feel like she has given up all control[1]. Watching Ann dance recently at the Lu Watters tribute concert, we just had to stop in our tracks for a moment and just say "dang, she can move!" You don't want to miss these two.
For the first time ever, Epic Swing Night will be hosting a second track of classes! Nathan Dias and Audrey Kanemoto will be leading and Advanced and Intermediate level critique session with a small group of dancers - there are a limited number of spots for this class, so make sure you register in advance!
The Jazz lecture will again be given by Alisa Clancy from 91.1 KCSM! Alisa's description of and passion for jazz music, the musicians, the era, and their circumstances have inspired goosebumps. This month’s epic topic will be “Trumpet Stars of the 30s & 40s.” This is included with the price of the classes or dance admission, so take this opportunity to enrich your understanding of the history behind the music we move to!
Since the night is pretty dense, we'll be offering free pizza for people attending at least one class during the lecture time slot.
This month we will feature DJ Shane Promtet spinning along side DJ Sarah Quan!
Considering the transformation (of venues) we are going through, our theme this month is Rocky Horror Picture Show! We'll do the time warp at the dance and go to a midnight showing (for Brian's virgin viewing) of this cult classic!
How much does all this epicness cost, you ask? Well, that all depends on your reflexes!

We will be hosting the classes, lecture, and dance in City College of San Francisco's Health and Wellness Center, located at 50 Phelan Ave, San Francisco, CA 94122. However, Google Maps may direct you to a strange location if you use this. Use the map below to know where to go. Enter from the front, and go up the stairs and to the right to find us.
Footnotes:
[1] This was meant more as commentary on how badass Patrick is, an not commentary on roles in the dance. For more on that, we recommend this awesome article that was recently referred to us: http://www.annmony.com/blog/2010/12/how-about-some-clouds-with-that/
