Epic Swing Night – March 9th, 2013

featuring Jean & Bromley and the Port City Jazz Band

Epic Swing Night is finally back and we're ready to start our next year of EPIC events!

We're starting of strong with an aerials workshop from Jean & Bromley! If you have not seen these two fly through the air effortlessly, this video is still the one that packs the most tricks and air moves into one routine!

If you were at their workshop last year, you know that these guys have mad hops and pack some serious power behind their aerials. For those of you who got an introduction to flying from them at SATS, this is a great opportunity to get some more practice, confidence, and new moves for your aerials arsenal!

Check out our Epic Schedule:

5:00-6:15 Epic Beginning Aerials Class
6:15-7:45 BREAK FOR DINNER
7:45-9:00 Epic Intermediate Aerials Class
9:00-12:00 Epic Swing Dance
With the Port City Jazz Band

Epic Swing Night happily welcomes back the Port City Jazz Band to play on our inaugural night of 2013! These guys played for us multiple times in 2012, and they always rock the house with their seriously swinging music!

Epic Swing Night October 13th

featuring Karen Turman, Carl Nelson, and The Cottontails

Epic Swing Night hosts Karen Turman and Carl Nelson for our next event on October 13th!

If you don't know her already, you may recognize Karen Turman (aka "The Turmanator") for her uncanny likeness to Ariel from The Little Mermaid (and her total lack of shyness for getting into her mermaid costume… well, into any costume.) There is no squelching the spirit and enthusiasm she brings to every event she attends.

We are lucky in the bay area to have Carl Nelson as a local resident. You may have seen just a short 30 seconds of his talent recently in the 9:20 Special's 30 Second Showcase! Creative and expressive, the quality of Carl's solo body movement clearly shines!

Karen and Carl will be teaching a short routine that includes both solo movement (taught during the first class) and some fun and flashy partnered dancing too (taught during the second class)! These classes are for both intermediate and advanced dancers alike. You will not be rotating in the second class, so we recommend finding a dedicated partner for this adventure of a lifetime!

Here's the Epic Schedule:

5:00-6:30 = Epic Adventure - Part 1 - Solo Dancing
6:30-7:30 = Epic Dinner & Lecture with Alisa Clancy
7:30-9:00 = Epic Adventure - Part 2 - Partnered Routine
9:00-12:00 = Epic Swing Dance with The Cottontails

Alisa Clancy from KCSM Jazz 91.1 will be back to give the Epic Jazz Lecture!

If you would like to dine with us during the lecture, please pre-pay $9 for dinner that we will be ordering again from Thaiger Thai Kitchen. Convenient and Delicious! If you want dinner at the door, the cost goes up to $10.

Ever since we heard them at Swingin' At The Savoy almost 1.5 years ago, we've wanted to hire back The Cottontails! What a hit they made that night! We've got a piano in the house, so Epic Swing Night was the perfect opportunity!

Epic Swing Night September 8th

featuring Kevin St. Laurent, Jo Hoffberg, and Port City Jazz Band

Epic Swing Night is having another AERIALS WORKSHOP on September 8th with the incredible Kevin St. Laurent & Jo Hoffberg! We will also have an accompanying Jam Circle class where we can all work on creating our own amazing awe inspiring sequences for when the music gets really hot!

The Aerials classes come as a two part series. Part 1 is accessible to all levels and will cover basics of connection and safety, as well as a few moves that are fun & flashy that everyone should have in their arsenal of aerials. Part 2 will delve into moves that require a more solid aerials foundation and chemistry with a partner, all of which will be drilled in Part 1 so you will be prepared. The Jam Circle Class material can stand alone without aerials training and will focus on each pair of students creating a sequence that will have practical application in Jam Circle situations. As such, we will not be rotating in the Jam Circle Class.

All classes require a pre-selected partner.

We can try to assist you in finding a partner if you need help. Facebook is also an effective way of finding pairings. Nothing is more flattering and more effective in procuring a partner for this one day of classes than asking someone you like dancing with in person!

Check out our Epic Schedule:

4:00-5:15 = Epic Aerials Class - Part 1
5:30-6:45 = Epic Aerials Class - Part 2
6:45-7:45 = Epic Dinner & Lecture with Alisa Clancy
7:45-9:00 = Epic Jam Circle Class!
9:00-12:00 = Epic Swing Dance with the Port City Jazz Band

Alisa Clancy from KCSM Jazz 91.1 will be back to give the Epic Jazz Lecture: "Spotlight on Duke Ellington!"

If you would like to dine with us during the lecture, please pre-pay $8 for dinner that we will be ordering again from Thaiger Thai Kitchen. Convenient and Delicious! If you want dinner at the door, the cost goes up to $10.

This month we welcome Port City Jazz Band to the hallowed halls of the San Mateo Masonic Lodge. Find out more about this band at their website

Epic Swing Night – June 9th

featuring Michael Faltesek, The Careless Lovers

Flying in for their first appearance in the Bay Area, Epic Swing Night proudly brings to you the sensational, Lindy-Hopper-comprised Careless Lovers! If you've been dancing in the Lindy scene any time in the last year, you know this is cause for insane amount of excitement!

Many of you know them from the awesome music video they made for the Jazz Dance Film Fest.

For those of you who were at the 920 Open House or the Stompy Jones CD release party, you've also probably seen WNH's Careless Lindy Hoppers perform a routine (choreographed by Kevin & Jo) to this song as well.

In any case, you can be sure that they are going to bring one hell of a STFO party!

Check out our Epic Schedule:

4:30-6:00 = Epic Lindy Hop Class
6:00-7:30 = Epic Jazz Lecture & Dinner
7:30-9:00 = Epic Solo Jazz Class
9:00-12:00 = Epic Swing Dance with the Careless Lovers!

Mike Faltesek (aka Falty) will be laying down the Lindy wisdom for the night, assisted by our very own Audrey Kanemoto! They'll be teaching two 1.5 hour classes: one on Lindy Hop improvisation, and a solo jazz class that will teach you the routine "Doing The Jive"!

We've got another jazz lecture by Alisa Clancy from 91.1 KCSM! This month the topic will be "The American Songbook: Fodder For Great Dancing"

We will also have two performances - The Careless Lindy Hoppers will be performing their "Black Coffee" routine with the live band, and everyone who knows "Doing the Jive" will be able to perform with the band as well!

Class Descriptions

Improvisation: Do you find yourself getting stuck in the same patterns over and over? Does it feel like you're just stringing a bunch of moves together? Not sure what to do to be "more creative?" Need to break out and add more style and personality to your dancing? Falty is your man! He's one of the most creative and fun dancers in the Lindy world! Anyone who has taken his classes on these things only have glowing reviews. This will be a mixed level class - we may or may not divide by levels again. Falty assures us that whatever happens, there will be a mix of material that is challenging and inspiring for both intermediate and advanced dancers alike!

Solo Jazz: You know the Shim Sham. Maybe you know the Tranky Doo, and perhaps even the Big Apple. If you're old school, you might even know the Jitterbug Stroll. But, you know what? All of those are going to be "old school" now. The next big thing is totally "Doing the Jive!" The 9:20 Special will be teaching one class on this right before ESN, and we wanted to give everyone a chance to learn it and perform it to the band! All you 9:20 peeps, come on out and get more solid with the routine. Everybody else, let's do the jive! Dancers of all levels will find something valuable to learn here. Falty has been one of the big draws at Stompology (solo jazz weekend workshop) for a number of years - you can count on him to give you invaluable instruction on how to make your movements authentic and clean, as well as a fresh perspective on solo movement.
